Airbnb was born out of necessity in 2007 when two roommates in San Francisco, Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia, couldn’t afford their rent. They had an idea: rent out air mattresses in their apartment to conference attendees who couldn’t find hotel rooms. They created a simple website called AirBed & Breakfast.
